Mission

I’ve lived in the city of Portsmouth my whole life. Much of this naval city was destroyed by bombing in world war II. Few of its edwardian and art deco buildings remained, and its victorian slums were wiped out. Many concrete monoliths and brutalist architecture were built in their place in the 60’s. You take this mish-mash of buildings that represent the city’s history for granted as you pass by them every day.

Over the last few years I’ve watched many of these building’s become abandoned, demolished, or derelict, left to rot by a council who deem them unimportant. As these buildings pass, so does Portsmouth’s heritage. My aim is to document as many of these constructions as I can before they’re wiped from our memories.

The locations are photographed myself, before creating a hand-drawing from the resulting photograph. Once completed, I scan into the computer to add layers of toning.
